Workshop 1

Cinema, Memory and the Community: Contexts, Skills and Current Projects

This one-day workshop will lay out the full range of current and recent projects that have sought and used memories of cinema, introducing work being done in universities, public bodies and the private sector. Participants will be able to share details of their projects with the group, as well as hearing about the exciting work being done elsewhere. The workshop will also offer skills training in oral history and interviewing practice, as well as more focussed discussions on topics such as funding, creative public engagement, interview techniques and questionnaire design, and confidentiality and consent. Key contributors will include Professor Melvyn Stokes (‘Cultural Memory and British Cinema-going of the 1960s’ project, UCL), Dr Daniela Treveri Gennari (‘The Lost Italian Audience’ project, Oxford Brookes University), Dr Shelley Trower (Oral History Society and University of Roehampton) and Dr Lorraine Dennis (Prisons Memory Archive, Queens University Belfast).
